Anecdote
|
Note: According to his daughter Alta, "he was sent to work [about 1901/2] for Mr. Coffey, as farm labor, he was abt. 10 years old, 5th grade & never returned to school until he went to Salina, Kansas in 1912 Telegrapher School, then onto the Railroad. After 1917 when my parents married they were sent to Iron Mountain (Laramie County) Wyoming to work. They bought land, as did Anna (his mother) my parents sold the ranch abt. 1924 when my father was transfered to Wheatland (Platte County) Wyoming. Anna hated the cold weather and Samuel (her son) bought her out, believed she returned to Missouri." |
Death of a paternal grandfather
|
Citation details: pages 80-82 Note: Mr. Reed had been ill for a long time with kidney trouble and died very suddenly. He ate a hearty breakfast and was taking his usual rest after that meal and felt as well as usual. There was no one present when he passed away. His aged companion was in another room attending to her household duties. Thinking that he had slept long enough she went to rouse him and found he had passed over the river. |

Note: He helped the family of his younger brother Owen Herbert Reed when Herbert died on the job in Colorado. Herbert's widow could get insurance benefits only by relocating from Wyoming to Colorado. She lacked the resources to do that so Mort traded farmland he owned south of Wheatland, WY and secured a house for them in Loveland, CO. When Herbert's oldest son, Owen, joined the Army in December, 1940, he purchased the home from Mort. |
