Note: Guilford left home the day he was 21 and went to Ohio to work on a farm for a year. After that he spent some time in New Orleans. In 1825 or 1826 he went to Coles County, Illinois and worked first on his brother's farm. Afterward he entered 80 acres of land.

Note: The first white men to enter the area around Ashmore, Illinois were the Dudleys. Guilford and another early settler kept a "bachelor's hall" for several years. The first frame barn in the county was erected on the Dudley farm. After it was raised, it was christened "Bachelor's Delight and the Pride of the Fair".
