Anecdote

Note: Her sister Thecla recalls that one of her first memories of Lucille was that when she was young she ate very slowly. The rest of us gobbled much faster. She always was tiny, and they told me she was ill often when she was very young. Mama used to put her in sand to play in the sun to try and give her strength. I remember Papa telling her that she would probably be the one to be as heavy as Mama when she grew older. Needless to say, that didn't come true. Lucille, Tina and I became close while in high school. We went to dances, tried smoking - making French Fries to cover our breath!!, and wore lipstick in front of Mama and Papa. One thing we decided amongst ourselves was that we would be honest with Mama and Papa no matter what they asked us about. We also became close with Brother Al who was our supporting brother all through High School. Lucille hurt her ankle out sleigh riding with the stoneboat. I also recall her having the mumps and how mysterious a disease it was to me. Lucille missed alot of school because of her illnesses and had to repeat two grades, which made her a very determined young lady wanting to do a great job on all she tried. She became an excellent mother, and also another great cook in the family. Very soon after joining the School Lunch Staff at the local Junior High School, she became the manager. She is retired now, and I am sure they miss her very much. She married Bill Rodgers who spent many years at the refinery, and then went on to do some Real Estate.
